Gold Damask

Monday, July 12, 2010

A very close friend of mine got married on 4th of July down at Battery Gardens and I had the pleasure of making a cake for her intimate event.  I stenciled a damask pattern then hand painted it gold.  Time consuming, but definitely worth it.  To it, I added a simple flower with gold lining.  The flavors were red velvet with cream cheese frosting (our most popular combo!)

We also made 5 cupcakes with a ring hidden in one of them.  Instead of a bouquet toss, the single ladies were told to grab one and who ever finds the ring in theirs will get married next!  (except the funny thing was, the girl who got it was in middle school :) hehe)

It looks amazing! Stencil designs are not easy esp on a round cake. Just wondering why you choose to hand paint the gold onto the stencil. Would the effect have been less dramatic if you colored the royal icing gold?

This cake is amazing! What kind of stencil did you use? Also, did you first stencil on royal icing and then paint over top?

Hi Sherri. If it were any matte color yes, I would color the royal icing, but with gold it definitely would not have produced the same kind of sheen/glisten as it does hand painted. Plus mixing gold power into royal to get that even concentration would waste a lot of pricey powder. You're right, stenciling a round cake is no easy task :)

Ali, you can find the damask stencil at the cake supply store or on designerstencils.com Yes to the procedure.

This is beautiful!! With a cream cheese filling, how do you keep it refrigerated without the fondant 'perspiring' when you take it out?
